• YWCA Anchorages mission is to eliminate racism and empower women. Below are examples of how we are helping:YWCAs Girls Circle and Boys Council programs: Girls Circle is a structured support group that increases positive connection, personal strengths, and competence in girls. A 2007 study shows Girls Circle participation leads to decreases in alcohol use and self-harming behaviors as well as increases in attachment to school and self-efficacy. Girls Circle's success prompted development of Boys Council. YWCA plans to have 40 Circle and Council groups meet in 2009-10 and serve at least 240 young people. YWCAs Women$Finance Programs Brass Tacks course helps prepare potential business owners by covering day-to-day operations, developing a strategic marketing plan, writing a business plan, human resource and management issues, and finding financing to open a business in 20 hours of training. One participant in the course successfully opened her own café. She reported she was looking for a larger location because she was doing so well.YWCA ENCOREplus Program, through our Womens Wellness department, provides breast and cervical cancer outreach, education and referral to screening services. In 2008-09, we spoke to 11,207 people about the importance of early detection and breast and cervical cancer screening guidelines; and either screened or referred 1,186 medically underserved women. We also provided transportation, child care and interpretation services for 251 women who would not have been able to get screening. One woman was able to get free screening with our help. She knew how important screening was because her mother survived breast cancer, but she couldn't pay for insurance and didn't know about YWCAs program. She was so thankful she helped us outreach at the Anchorage Literacy Program and included translators for non-English speakers.
