• Our mission is to develop treatments and diagnostics for neglected tropical diseases that affect the most impoverished social groups. An urgent gap in treatment technology has left millions in sub-Saharan Africa at risk of debilitating and deadly parasitic diseases--but we're developing a novel diagnostic device that will end this.There is an urgent need for a simple, rapid, and quantitative diagnostic test to detect loiasis, an infection of the parasitic roundworm Loa loa (L. loa). Even though treatments exist, there are no commercial diagnostic tests available to identify the disease and monitor treatment efficacy. The proposed rapid diagnostic test for loiasis will address two critical needs. First, it will enable the identification and treatment of loiasis itself. Second, it will serve as a pre-screening tool to improve the safety of mass drug administration (MDA) campaigns aimed at eliminating two other debilitating diseases: onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis. Onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis are also due to roundworms and are being aggressively treated through MDA campaigns with annual distributions of approximately 100 and 540 million doses of ivermectin, respectively. A major concern of using ivermectin is that it can induce severe adverse events and in some instances be lethal when administered to people suffering from loiasis. In the absence of a rapid test for loiasis, regions endemic for loiasis are simply excluded from MDA programs, making the elimination of onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis impossible in West and Central Africa. For this reason, out of all the Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD), new tests for loiasis would have the highest impact (9 out of 10) if achieved.
