Girls On The Run Of Greater Milwaukee

Description

• Girls on the Run is a life-changing nonprofit program for girls in 3rd-8th grade. We are the independent Greater Milwaukee council but part of a network of more than 200 councils in the U.S. and Canada. The Girls on the Run program centers on an academically evaluated and proven model. The 20-lesson curriculum: Provides pre-adolescent girls with the necessary tools to embrace their individual strengths and successfully navigate life experiences Combines training for a 5K (3.1 miles) running event with lessons that inspire girls to become independent thinkers, enhance their problem-solving skills, and make healthy decisions Is delivered by volunteer coaches to small teams of 8-20 girls, who meet twice a week for 10 weeks Uses running to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence through accomplishment Concludes with a celebratory 5K that currently is held at Greenfield Park in West Allis Is offered twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fallThe program operates during after-school hours within several public and private schools, as well as within community centers such as YMCAs and health centers. The program can only operate successfully because of active collaboration with girls and their parents, schools, volunteers, and the community. The curriculum is tremendously beneficial to all girls, irrespective of their families socioeconomic background. However, our council is committed to providing the resources necessary to allow girls from low-income families to participate. Over 70% of our girls receive a full or partial scholarship to participate in the program. Our program costs $150 per girl per season, but most of our girls in need receive the program for only $20. Since our founding, we also have committed to providing any girl in need with a free pair of properly fitting running shoes.
