Tkiya: The Jewish Community Music School

Description

• Imagine a place where three generations come together to celebrate Jewish culture through music. A place where private instruction, group classes, and intergenerational music making are all components of a unique community experience. Tkiya has been offering classes at the Sid Jacobson JCC for 5 years. While continuing to serve this Long Island community, we are raising money to open our own location in Brooklyn where we can expand our programming into a complete community music school. This summer, we already raised $7,347 from a total of 115 donors through an Indiegogo campaign and are continuing to raise the resources we need to launch a new location. As recent studies show that fewer non-Orthodox Americans are self-identifying as Jewish, it is important to acknowledge that it is becoming more difficult for many Jews to connect with a culture so ancient in a world so modern. Music exists at the core of every culture and we believe that nothing can reach us and teach us like the power of music. Tkiya uses participatory music experiences to help people of all ages find their unique connection with Jewish culture and to strengthen the bonds of our diverse Jewish community. Tkiya experiences are offered in partnership with Sid Jacobson JCC, Kings Bay Y, YM & YMHA of Washington Heights & Inwood, PJ Library, and more! Tkiya is under a fiscal sponsorship with the Creative Jewish International.
