• HelpMeSee was founded in 2010 with the goal of training cataract care specialists to address the shortage of eye care providers needed to restore sight to every child and adult in the world blind because of cataract. Working with 240 partners in China, India, Nepal, Sierra Leone, Viet Nam, Togo, Peru, The Gambia, Madagascar and Myanmar, HelpMeSee will have restored sight to nearly 250,000 people by the end of 2016. HelpMeSees campaign uses a three-part approach: 1. The Training of Highly Skilled SpecialistsHelpMeSee is in the latter stages of developing the HelpMeSee Eye Surgery Simulator as part of an integrated learning system designed to instruction tens of thousands of cataract specialists on Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery. 2. Finding Patients in Need of CareUsing an Android smartphone, community health workers find and record patient information as a photograph, voice recording and GPS location in the HelpMeSee Reach app. In this initial medical record a pre-surgery test is conducted by the partner and if required the patient is scheduled for treatment. After the procedure the community health worker is alerted through the app to conduct a 4-week follow-up vision test. 3. Supporting High Quality SurgeriesDelivering high-quality healthcare in the developing world presents a unique set of challenges. Many medicines may be counterfeit and infection rates are higher than in the developed world. In some areas accountability and standards may be week. To address these issues, HelpMeSee developed a pre-sterilized, single-use surgical kit and a cloud-based surgical reporting system.The HelpMeSee surgical kit is a complete set of the instruments pharmaceuticals and disposables required to perform an MSIC surgery. The cloud-based surgical reporting system monitors the outcomes of all procedures.Our goal is to use these for a solution where after initial setup partners can continue this work on their own sustainably.
