- Iron Range Engineering is a pioneer in innovative engineering education. IRE is a forerunner in updating the educational system from one of passive listening to lectures and doing homework, to one of engaged action. IRE believes strongly that education should be completely revamped to match what studies and science have shown is and is not effective in learning. There is a mismatch between what science knows, and how society educates. IRE takes these known principals in science and research and applies them to the education of engineering students. Students no longer sit through lectures and even at maximum participation and engagement are still just listening. IRE doesn't hand students a bucket of information. Students go out and get the information. IRE is a school of doing. Students are teamed up each semester, and given a real engineering project, from a real company client. Students base their technical learning classes around what engineering concepts they need to know for the project. Students then work as teams to complete the project. Throughout the project, IRE puts emphasis on many that other schools don't even address. For instance, there are 3 major presentations that the teams must present to the entire school, which are designed to give the students real experience in communicating technical ideas to people without engineering backgrounds. Throughout the project IRE places a lot of emphasis on professionalism. Students are expected to dress appropriately as if they are representing a real company, or in this case, a school. Students are taught and expected to answer emails in an acceptable time frame, show up to meetings on time, things that would be expected from an engineer but that aren't addressed in most schools. Speaking properly and appropriately for a professional setting is stressed.
