• The Morse Institute Library, 14 East Central Street in downtown Natick, began as a modest collection of books in 1808 in the home of Samuel Morse, located a short distance from the librarys current site. In 1862, Mary Ann Morse, Samuels granddaughter, an unmarried woman, left her entire estate to build a library and fill it with books. In 1873, the library, designed in the Victorian Gothic style by George B. Thayer, was completed and became a landmark in downtown Natick. Its doors opened on New Years Day, 1874.A major renovation began in 1994, and the original library was completely restored, preserved, and incorporated into a 21st-century knowledge-sharing facility that opened in April, 1997. The librarys collection contains more than 160,000 items. Materials include books, audio books, CDs, DVDs, talking books for the blind, and magazines. Services include public Internet access, wireless access, database access, genealogical searching, basic computer classes, conversation groups for English Language Learners, and a bookmobile that delivers materials to neighborhoods, nursery schools, assisted living facilities, and to the homes of people who cant reach the library.For more information, please call (508) 647-6520 or visit www.morseinstitute.org.
