• LeaderSpark ignites the power of youth leadership by providing practical leadership skills development through a proven curriculum, training and coaching support. LeaderSpark started as the LEADER Institute in 1988 through a collaboration between the League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Columbus and the Educational Council, a confederation of the 16 school districts in Franklin County (Ohio). Founder, Karen Dawson, worked with many other volunteers to provide leadership skills training to girls attending public high schools in Franklin County. In 1999, the LEADER Institute was incorporated as a 501 (C)(3) non-profit organization with a Board of Directors; Karen Dawson became the Executive Director. The leadership training was expanded, offering the programs to other organizations who worked with both male and female youth locally and in other geographic areas. In 2004, our name was changed to LeaderSpark and we continued to grow our relationships with community-based organizations. In 2010, LeaderSpark became a United Way organization.LeaderSpark provides everything needed to offer leadership skills to youth, 14 years and older. LeaderSpark provides the curriculum books, facilitator training, evaluation and report-writing support; and coaching advise.
