• We are a non-profit devoted to raising the bar for American infrastructure projects. It is time we stopped pretending that rebuilding our highways is the best we can do. We are in the middle of the worst economy since the great depression, and what got us here wont get us out. The US interstate highway system and the New Deal were the two of the largest and most successful infrastructure projects of the 20th century. They were possible because the US government saw the need to build a system that could support the next economic generation. Its time for the next aspirational infrastructure project, the Interplanetary Highway System. Just as US interstate highways allow unprecedented economic development, and led to decades of growth, so the Interplanetary Highway System will lay the foundation for the next century. We went to the moon in the 60s, and only did that because we decided to. It was impossible at the time. We made it possible because it was hard. We knew we could fly people in the air and fly them to space. So why not fly them to the moon. In the same vein not ride an elevator to space? You have been riding them into the sky since you were a kid...these will just go a little higher. Our proposed Space Port Authority will initially be anchored by two elevators reaching from the ground to geosynchronous orbit. One in southern California and the other near New Orleans to maximizing existing cargo infrastructure. The technology associated with these elevators, like the technology enabling the new deal infrastructure are a mix of known and cutting edge. From space-based to elevator winches. None of it is unknown, but the mix of it creates both economic opportunities, but also a chance to leave the old ways of doing things behind. Its time to dream big.
