    • Make-A-Wish® Alaska and Washingtons mission is simple and clear. With the generous support of our donors and in partnership with our community, we do one thing: grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. But, what do we really do? For 30 years, we have provided more than 6,000 children and families with an opportunity to spend time together away from hospitals, treatments and procedures. A wish gives them a chance to feel normal again, a distraction from illness that provides hope and joy, and a healing experience when they are devastated by a life-threatening diagnosis.Why do we do it? Because research shows that wishes matter: Wish kids experience improved mental and emotional health and improved physical health and strength.Wish parents report that the shared wish experience can help repair and strengthen family relationships that become strained by the stresses of battling life-threatening medical conditions. Wishes give kids the courage to pursue their dreams - dreams they believed were too difficult or impossible to achieve before their wish experience.Right now, weve made a promise to about 400 children who are waiting for their wishes. Weve told them that they have been approved for a wish. We will make good on our promise, but if all 400 children were to ask us right now if they could receive their wish our answer would be no. We simply dont have all the funding we need to grant their wishes in real time. And, thats just the beginning. Every year one in four seriously-ill children in Alaska and Washington does not receive a wish because they are not being referred. With more funding and capacity, we can change this.
