• Jefferson Center is a nonpartisan civic engagement and public policy organization founded in 1974. Our mission is to strengthen democracy by advancing informed, citizen-led solutions to challenging public issues. We advocate for the American public, not for specific policies or positions. To fulfill our mission, we specialize in cultivating creative partnerships, conducting public deliberation and engagement, and implementing high-impact organizing and outreach strategies so that individuals can participate meaningfully in policy development and civic life. We envision a democracy where citizens interact genuinely with public institutions, elected officials, community leaders, and with one another to address shared challenges and realize shared goals. We employ two primary strategies for achieving our vision: (1) We convene everyday citizens to engage in informed policy discussion through deliberation, to recommend community action on issues affecting their lives, and to support the efforts of community members seeking to initiate community action on recommendations generated through engagement projects (2) We work with community members to generate representative, informed positions on issues to shape the narrative of political debate in campaigns and elections While the primary tool we employ in our work is the Citizens Jury, we are continuously developing high quality, innovative, and inclusive engagement strategies to achieve our vision.
