- Leading BioSciences believes the gastrointestinal tract is the foundation of human health and that when this essential organ is disrupted, it can drive a variety of serious acute and chronic medical conditions. Within the GI tract is an ecosystem of enzymes, bacteria, barriers, tissues, nutrients, mucin, mucus, food and communities of microorganisms that work together to shape our health, as well as our illnesses. Of critical importance is how the integrity and permeability of the intestinal mucosal barrier impacts health. Leading BioSciences refers to this ecosystem, as well as the barriers that protect the rest of the body from these potent elements, as the GastrobiomeTM. Leading BioSciences has amassed a deep scientific understanding of the gastrobiome and the intestinal mucosal barrier, which we leverage to develop novel therapeutics and diagnostics for addressing widespread medical indications, including acute critical-care conditions and chronic, daily-maintenance health issues. On the critical-care side, we address postoperative ileus, adhesions, shock, multiple-organ failure and complications from cardiovascular surgery. These are conditions that have long perplexed physicians, and continue to impair quality of life for millions of patients every year. Our lead drug candidate LB1148, now in clinical development, is a novel therapy administered orally to preserve gastrointestinal integrity and thereby prevent or treat these serious medical conditions. LBS has now expanded beyond acute protection of the intestinal mucosal barrier to pioneer and advance new products for chronic diseases rooted in the gastrobiome. We are developing a range of therapeutic and diagnostic approaches for conditions including obesity, diabetes, high-cholesterol, hypertension, insomnia, metabolic syndrome, autism and numerous additional conditions, which are influenced to varying degrees by the milieu of enzymes, bacteria and other chemicals that escape from the gut.
