The Centers for Disease Control estimate that 50 to 80 percent of Americans are infected with CMV by the age of 40. There is no approved therapy for the prevention or treatment of congenital CMV. While current antiviral therapies have reduced the rate of CMV disease-related mortality in transplant recipients, such treatments have been linked to increased toxicity, delayed immune reconstitution and late onset of CMV.
