Camp Horizon provides year-round, no-cost programs to metro Atlanta's youth in foster care in Cobb, Dekalb, Fulton and Gwinnett counties. Our mission is to restore dignity and hope to children, teens and young adults, aged 8-23, who have been abused and neglected -- empowering them to make good decisions and lead healthy, productive lives. We're changing lives, and it all starts with Summer Camp. We partner with the Georgia Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS) as well as private foster care providers to select children for our mentoring Summer Camp Program, where we match one child, aged 8-11, with one dedicated adult for an entire week. We host our overnight camp at Camp Twin Lakes, where we have been a charter partner camp since 1993. Summer Camp is a safe place where children in foster care can just be regular kids. Our mentoring model is unique for a summer camp and in particular for children in foster care who may not receive much, if any, personal attention in their lives. While our campers experience all the quintessential activies, like swimming, biking, horseback riding and arts and crafts, we also feature a daily self esteem class that tackles tough topics like self awareness, feelings, anger management, safety, and affirmation, using games, role playing and even puppet shows. As our campers build trust throughout the week, friendships evolve, and soon they begin to see the world in a new way. Each aspect of Camp is intentionally designed to provide challenges and opportunities for success. Campers begin to see what is possible for themselves at Camp and also out in the world -- a powerful tool for victims of trauma.We offer continuity. Campers graduate into our Leadership Development Program (LDP) at 12 and later into our Camp Horizon Adult Mentoring Program (CHAMPs) at 18. Year-round outings and events provide stability and consistency to deserving kids. A new day, a better day, is on the Horizon.
