- Toward Maximum Independence (TMI) is a nonprofit agency that advocates and assists individuals with developmental disabilities and who are deaf and hard of hearing to be included members of the community. Since 1981 TMI has been working with local regional centers and the California State Departments of Developmental Services, Rehabilitation and Habilitation to achieve its mission to support people with developmental disabilities to live, work and take their rightful place in society.TMI works with individuals to achieve their lifelong goals; to live in their own homes in the community, to secure paid employment by working in real jobs for real pay and to maintain family unity or assure that all children are part of a loving family. We accomplish this by providing supports tailored to meet their individual needs. TMI looks forward to a time when all people, including those most vulnerable, will be naturally accepted and included in community life. Until that time, TMI will continue to provide vital supports to those whose quality of life depends on it.
