USECU was established in 1936 as California State Credit Union #17, with the primary goal of helping employees of the San Diego branch of the Division of Highways. Division workers were busy building Interstate 8 connecting western and eastern San Diego County and they needed an inexpensive way to do their banking. So they pooled their money to create one of Californias earliest credit unions, also known as financial cooperatives. In the 1970s, we became known as University & State Employees Credit Union, reflecting our expanded legacy of serving the financial needs of university and state employees. In 1999, our charter expanded again to include members of the community at large, and we shortened our name to simply USE Credit Union.After decades of growth, were now among the top 50 in asset size of more than 400 credit unions in the state of California. Headquartered in San Diego, Calif., we have eight branches in San Diego, Alameda, Sacramento, Santa Clara and Yolo Counties.Todays USECU is a modern-day financial cooperative that values its members and their experiences with our organization.
