• Forestdale is a child welfare agency headquartered in Queens, serving as a resource for families from Astoria to Far Rockaway. Our work with traumatized children and families began with our founding in 1854. Today, our mission is to ensure that children have the fundamental assets they need to grow into independent and engaged adults, specifically a safe and secure home life, education and workforce opportunity, and health and sexuality education. Forestdales programs, which engage over 1,200 families every year, consist of:Strong Families-Foster Care: Each year we are responsible for over 550 children and youth in our foster care program. Our model includes specialized therapeutic services for family members with emotional and behavioral disturbances.Strong Families-Preventive: Forestdales Preventive programs provide case management and advocacy for 75 families at risk of having their children placed in foster care. In 2011, we added intensive services for families dealing with substance abuse and mental health challenges.Strong Fathers: Every year we prepare 250 low-income fathers to become more active and involved parents through intensive parenting classes, workforce development, and co-parenting counseling. Our Young Fathers program focuses on the challenges faced by unmarried dads in their teens and early twenties. Strong Mothers: We provide case management and parenting education to approximately 30 teens who are pregnant, parenting or at-risk for early pregnancy.
