• The YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. The Topeka YWCA was founded November 19, 1887 by a group of women seeking to enhance and elevate womens lives physically, mentally, morally and spiritually. The YWCA Center for Safety and Empowerment, provides free and confidential services to victims of domestic and sexual violence, stalking, and human trafficking in Shawnee, Jackson, and Wabaunsee Counties in Kansas. Services include but are not limited to court advocacy, emergency shelter, support groups and 24 hour crisis support. YWCA Leadership Momentum is a 6 month program designed to accelerate professional growth, enhance self-awareness, improve personal and team performance. Highlights of the course include: learning & leveraging political savvy, negotiation styles and tactics, developing and demonstrating strategic leadership skills, building resilience and managing components of change process. YWCA Kids Quest provides before and after-school enrichment opportunities for elementary students in eight schools in the Topeka Public School District. FEATS, Families Empowered by Additional Teaching of Students, is a 21st Century Community Service Learning Grant partnership the YWCA has with Williams Magnet School to provide an expanded day academic program. Programming emphasizes tutoring provided by certified teachers in core academic subjects including reading, language arts, and mathematics. Additionally, program curriculum includes physical health, nutritional health and social skill development. Girls on the Run is a physical activity based positive youth development program which empowers young girls to respect their bodies, honor their voices and embrace their individual and unique personal gifts. Girls on the Run participants at an early age develop a solid foundation of self esteem that will provide long term future impact.
