- Drax Biomass is a manufacturer of compressed wood pellets produced from sustainably managed working forests. Headquartered in Atlanta, GA with operations across the Southeastern US, we employ innovative manufacturing techniques to produce high quality pellets that can be shipped safely and efficiently around the world for use as a renewable, low-carbon fuel. Our pellets allow electric utilities to reduce their dependence on coal, lower carbon emissions and provide new sources of safe, reliable and affordable power. Led by an experienced team of operations professionals, Drax Biomass is committed to supporting the communities in which we operate by promoting sustainable forestry and investing in local economic development. Drax Biomass is a wholly owned United States subsidiary of Drax Group plc, a major electricity generator in the United Kingdom with a commitment to producing renewable power.Our facilitiesWe own and operate two manufacturing sites that convert locally sourced wood fiber into compressed pellets: Morehouse Bioenergy near Bastrop, LA and Amite Bioenergy in Gloster, MS. These facilities are located in areas hard-hit by recent consolidation in the pulp and paper industry, resulting in a surplus of low-value wood from harvesting operations. We also operate the Baton Rouge Transit facility at the Port of Greater Baton Rouge, the closest deepwater port to our two plants. We can process and ship up to two million metric tons of pellets annually from this facility. Our pellets arrive by rail from the Morehouse plant, and by truck from the Amite plant. The Baton Rouge Transit Facility also receives pellets from third party manufacturers in the region. We operate this site in conjunction with our local partner, Host Terminals, and it serves as the final domestic stop for all Drax Biomass pellets destined for export.
