• Farmington Soap Works was founded in 2009, with the goal of providing a superior, hand-cast alternative to mass produced detergents masquerading as soap. From the beginning, we were determined use only the finest ingredients in our cold-process soaps, and not to use any artificial preservatives or animal-based products.We started by developing a special blend of tropical oils, formulated to be cleansing and conditioning, and that would produce a nice foamy lather. This is the base for most of our soaps; a few also contain cocoa or shea butter for extra conditioning. Our Classic Castile is an exception - by definition, Castile soaps are traditionally formulated with 100% Olive oil, and we maintain that tradition.These oils are then saponified using a caustic solution (NaOH). Our process ratio ensures that a small amount of excess oils are available (4-5%), to make sure we end up with a very mild soap. And unlike mass produced soaps, we don't remove any of the glycerin that is produced during saponification, so our soaps are extremely gentle to your skin.We then carefully select the colorants, fragrances or other additives that define each of our soap varieties, and and stir them into the mixture. The soap batter is then hand-poured into molds and set aside to cure.Once the saponification process is complete, we de-mold the soap loaves and slice them into individual bars. At this point the chemical process is complete, but the soap is still quite soft. By allowing the soap to dry an additional 2-6 weeks we end up with a much harder and long-lasting bar.
