• Forsyth Humane Society is an animal shelter located in Winston-Salem, NC where we provide temporary homes for cat and dogs in Forsyth County. We operate a no-kill shelter, our animals stay with us until a forever home can be found. Each year FHS shelters, nurtures, and finds homes for over 700 dogs and cats. FHS is 100% community funded. We are supported by 1,000 community volunteers who contribute more than 13,000 service hours yearly. We are always looking for volunteers and have many different ways in which people can help out both at the shelter and in the community. We even have opportunities for young people. We educate the community on pet responsibility and the benefits of animal companionship. Being responsible includes keeping your pet safe, the community safe, yourself safe, and other animals safe. We work with children both in and out of the classroom. Over the summer we offer Critter Camp, in which children ages 9-11 can engage in humane education in a fun way. During the school year we visit classrooms, after-school programs, and community groups to speak on a variety of topics from basic pet care to dog fighting. We also participate in a variety of community events with ROVER, our Regional Outreach Vehicle for Education and Rescue. Each year FHS participates in over 50 community events to promote responsible pet care. We also offer our Critter Cuddlin program to the community because animals are healers. Through the Critter Cuddlin program trained FHS volunteers take their own pets for social visits to area nursing homes and retirement facilities bringing animal companionship and conversation to people who miss having their pets.
