- Making an impact Since 2001 Sonrisas has been working to improve the dental health of Coastside residents and to break the cycle of dental disease in our community. When the clinic opened, many people sought emergency care only and were not aware of the importance of dental hygiene and the need for ongoing dental care. Eleven years later, with many innovative programs in place, 55% fewer patients now seek emergency care. Sonrisas succeeded in improving the dental health of Coastsiders and breaking the cycle of neglect by providing access to affordable dental care and recognizing the need for dental screenings, dental hygiene education and instruction. Today, a professional dental staff offers four full days of comprehensive dental treatment. In addition they provide a robust education program of screening and education in most Coastside schools and instruction for parents on improving and maintaining their childrens hygiene and dental health. Outreach to community groups includes presentations to seniors, health professionals and others. Sonrisas provides dental supplies for use at home.
