• The Global Talent Retention Initiative of Michigan (GTRI) focuses on strengthening & diversifying Michigans economy through the retention of top international talent. GTRI's goal is to provide international students & Michigan employers with training & resources on relevant immigration regulations, finding a job & working in Michigan, & the cross-cultural issues that both employers & international applicants may experience during the hiring process.GTRI is a product of the Global Detroit Study about the impact of immigrant talent on the regions economy. Studies have shown that immigrants disproportionately contribute to economic growth, employment, & wage gains. In addition, more than 50% of PhDs & sometimes as much as 40% of masters degrees in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) are awarded each year in the U.S. to international students. Since IT & engineering are the fastest growing industries, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find qualified candidates for high level tech positions if international students are not considered as part of an employers applicant pool.Funded by the New Economy Initiative & the Michigan Economic Development Corporation & housed in the University Research Corridor, GTRI is a collaboration between the Global Michigan Initiative, Global Detroit, Michigan Universities, the American Immigration Lawyers Association, Michigans Economic Development Agencies, & ethnic chambers and cultural organizations.
