  • STOP Foodborne Illness is a national nonprofit public health organization dedicated to the prevention of illness and death from foodborne pathogens by: · Advocating for sound public policy · Building public awareness · Assisting those impacted by foodborne illness STOP was founded in 1993 in the aftermath of the Jack in the Box E. coli Outbreak, which sickened hundreds and killed four children. Since no other government or non-government organization was addressing this issue, STOP's grassroots organization rose to the challenge. Early on, STOP was a touchstone for families experiencing illness and loss of loved ones, and a resource for media outlets looking to provide information to the public. STOP has significantly improved public health by raising awareness about foodborne pathogens, advocating for stricter regulations and assisting those personally impacted by foodborne illness. We regularly work with and inform food industry trade groups and companies, national and local media, government representatives on both sides of the aisle, as well as the USDA, FDA, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In partnership with STOP's powerful advocates, we have seen multiple legislative actions passed, and continue to fight for stronger food safety reforms from farm to fork.
