• The Glenner Memory Care Centers, formerly called The George G. Glenner Alzheimer's Family Centers, were among the first in the nation to provide dementia-specific adult day health care. Thirty years later, the non-profit organization continues to provide specialized adult day programs and support services to San Diego County families affected by Alzheimer's Disease and other memory impairment illnesses. In addition to adult day care and weekly support groups, it provides information and referrals, case management, crisis intervention, family and community education and advocacy.The organziation was founded in 1982 by Dr. George G. Glenner and his wife, Joy. Dr. Glenner was a UCSD researcher who discovered a link to Alzheimer's that was used as a foundation for future research. Throughout the years the Glenner Centers has received widespread local, state and national awards. Dr. Glenner died in 1995.There currently are three centers to serve families throughout San Diego County -- in Hillcrest, Chula Vista and Encinitas. The Hillcrest and Chula Vista centers are freestanding buildings while the Encinitas Center is housed inside a senior living complex. The corporate offices also are home to the county's Guardian Angels program, which provides companionship to lonely seniors in long-term care facilities.
