• Xylome specializes in adaptive solutions that enable first-generation biofuel producers to implement second generation biofuel technologies. Xylome is a start-up biotechnology company based in Madison, Wisconsin. It was formed in 2007 with the primary goal of making cellulosic ethanol fermentation technology available to independent grain ethanol producers. Its founder, Thomas Jeffries, has more than 30 years of research and commercialization experience in pretreatment, saccharification and yeast fermentation technology. Xylomes competitive advantage is that it is the only company in the U.S. with resilient, efficient technology for the fermentation of cellulosic and hemicellulosic sugars by naturally occurring yeasts. These unusual organisms are capable of fermenting hemicellulosic and cellulosic sugars without genetic modification. Their inherent genetic stability, high capacity for hemicellulose fermentation, capacity to resist contamination, minimal nutritional requirements and resilience make them particularly suitable for commercial use. Xylome will provide and support a technology package that allows independent ethanol producers to diversify their feedstocks and expand their business into second-generation cellulosic fuels. With time, Xylome will provide biocatalysts to enable production of advanced biofuels from cellulosic and hemicellulosic hydrolysates.Xylome Corporation was awarded $750,000 to develop a Novel bioprocess for lipid production from industrial byproducts. The two-year grant for $750,000 will start on October 1, 2016 and run through September 30, 2018. This Phase II project strives to create the next generation of sustainable, renewable, clean burning, high energy density, transportation biofuels from industrial waste products.
