- HEARD is an all-volunteer nonprofit civil rights organization that promotes equal access to the justice system for deaf and disabled defendants, prisoners, and returning citizens across the nation. HEARD works to correct and prevent deaf wrongful convictions; advocates on behalf of deaf defendants and prisoners; and educates legal practitioners, justice professionals, and the Deaf Community. Our mission is to identify and remove barriers that prevent deaf people from participating in and having equal access to the legal system. HEARDs volunteers investigate possible deaf wrongful conviction cases, educate justice professionals about Deaf Culture, conduct deaf prisoner and defendant research, and assist deaf and deaf-blind prisoners with access and civil rights issues. In addition, HEARD created and maintains the only national deaf and deaf-blind prisoner database (http://bit.ly/RLySCJ), which it uses to ensure that deaf prisoners receive equal access to programs and services at jails and prisons across the nation. Some of our recent projects a recent Deaf Prisoner Phone Justice Campaign and a media campaign that raised awareness about rampant abuse of deaf, elderly and disabled prisoners in Florida.
