• The Northwest Arkansas Childrens Shelter is a private, non-profit organization that provides 24-hour emergency residential care to children who are victims of neglect or abuse.Mission:To provide a safe haven, high-quality care and hope for the future to children who have been abandoned, abused or neglected.Description:NWA Children's Shelter is an emergency children's shelter for girls from birth to age 17 and boys from birth to age 12 (or to age 14, if they are part of a sibling group). We have an on-site school and on-site counseling with a residential shelter that is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Children who have been abandoned, abused or neglected may stay with us for up to 45 days in a six-month period, before being placed in foster care or returned to their families.Since our beginning in 1993, we have cared for more than 7,500 abused and neglected children and currently serve about 550 kids per year. And even though virtually all the children in our care are placed here by the state of Arkansas, the state reimbursement we receive covers only 25% of our annual budget. Our caring community, as they have done for two decades and counting, supplies the remaining 75%.We are much more than a warehouse for abused and neglected children. We develop and individual case plan for each child to assess and address his or her unique circumstances and needs (medical, dental, vision, developmental, emotional, academic, therapeutic, etc.).The goal is to accomplish as much healing and progress as possible in our 45-day window and equip each child with a vision of and hope for a better life.
