Description

Since 2014, Counseling First has served the needs of the Chicagoland re-entry population (parole) as well as others involved in the criminal-justice system (probation, supervision, diversion). Our substance abuse and anger management counseling services are linchpins in strategies for reducing violence in Chicago. We are a licensed provider of DUI-related services, collaborating closely with state & local agencies (such as Secretary of State, Illinois Department of Corrections and Cook County Courts). Moreover we address rootcauses and offer clients customized, holistic education for new life skills. Looking to the future, we plan to develop innovative systems and business models to support veterans and young people working together as crews to build safer, better maintained and energy smart urban communities. Counseling First is led by Cynthia Barry, an experienced substance abuse counselor and social worker. She previously worked in the Illinois prison system for nearly a decade, and subsequently as an assertive community treatment (ACT) counselor both in St. Louis and in Chicago. Her credentials include: IAODAPCA Certified Reciprocal Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CRADC); and Certified Anger Management Specialist (CAMS-II). Counseling First is licensed by the State of Illinois Department of Human Services, Division of Alcohol & Substance Abuse (DASA) to provide DUI evaluations and early intervention services, as well as Level 1 and Level II (intensive) outpatient treatment for substance use disorders, as defined by placement criteria of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).
