• Kids' Orchestra's mission is to impact children's lives by creating a sense of community through after-school musical training and enrichment programs. Nearly 800 K-5 students from 21 different public, private, and charter schools across East Baton Rouge Parish are enrolled in after-school music instruction. 2 to 4 days a week, students are provided transportation from their home school to their Kids' Orchestra site school, are fed a healthy snack, and receive homework help, in addition to an hour of instrument instruction with a local professional educator. Kids' Orchestra is an El Sistema-inspired organization, with a guiding philosophy that music education can create great musicians and positively change the life trajectory of children in a given community. The El Sistema model began in Venezuela in 1975, serving the neediest children in that country through immersive music instruction. Notable international musicians such as Gustavo Dudamel, current Music & Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, are products of Venezuela's El Sistema program. Kids' Orchestra does not necessarily expect every program participant to become a life-long musician. However, by providing quality music instruction in a nurturing environment, we aim to develop hope and drive in the youth of our community. With 70% of Kids' Orchestra families qualifying for a tuition scholarship, Kids' Orchestra provides achievement opportunities to a high-need population at a critical age, instilling teamwork, trust, diligence, and other core values in the young people of Baton Rouge.
