• BECOME A TEACHER! Service members interested in a career in teaching will receive assistance to transition their leadership skills, training and core values to teaching in K - Grade 12 schools. Veterans bring the values of service to country and community to the classroom and help to shape the future of the country by inspiring its young minds. The mission of Troops to Teachers is to assist transitioning service members and veterans with meeting the requirements necessary to become teachers and to assist program participants with finding employment as a teacher when eligible. Troops to Teachers was congressionally authorized in 1993 to assist eligible members of the U.S. Armed Forces with transition into second careers as teachers after separation from active duty. Since that time, responsibility for program oversight and funding has been shared between the Departments of Defense and Education. The National Defense Authorization Act for fiscal 2013 transferred oversight and funding responsibilities back to the Department of Defense. Within the Department of Defense, the Office of the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy is responsible for program policy, funding and oversight. The Troops to Teachers (TTT) National Office, located within the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES), is responsible for day-to-day operations and management of the program. The TTT National Office is available to assist potential and current program participants. Since its inception, Troops to Teachers has provided counseling, referral and placement assistance to more than 44,000 participants.
