He has art directed exhibition books for the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Louvre as well as photography books for Mario Testino and Hedi Slimane. In 2001, Gan joined Harper's Bazaar as Creative Director. Six months later, the Council of Fashion Designers of America presented him with the Creative Visionary Award. 2012 brought the highly anticipated launch of Carine Roitfeld's CR Fashion Book which he cofounded and sits as the design director.
