- The Group Insurance Commission (GIC) covers almost 240,000 enrollees and over 435,000 people, and provides high value health insurance and other benefits to the Commonwealth's employees, retirees, and their survivors and dependents. The GIC also covers housing and redevelopment authorities' personnel, participating municipalities, and retired municipal employees and teachers in certain governmental units. The agency works with vendors selected through competitive bidding to offer cost-effective services through careful plan design and rigorous ongoing management. As the largest employer purchaser of health insurance in the Commonwealth, the GIC helps drive improvements in the entire health care delivery system.
