Cataracts maybe the #1 cause of blindness, but treatable, even when the patient is blind. Glaucoma is the #1 cause of permanent blindness in Africa. Unless a patient receives treatment, eventual blindness is a very real possibility. Founded in November 2005, the foundation's Eye Institute boasts a permanent staff of nine, including two full-time ophthalmologists.In China 70% of the population is rural and has little to no access to quality eye care, particularly cataract surgery. 7 million Chinese are on cataract surgery waiting lists .The foundation works with Project Vision to operate cataract surgery training centers to teach the next generation of cataract surgeons. China has committed to building 100 rural clinics for this new generation of local surgeons. The foundation funds important first-step ophthalmic research studies vai its annual grants program. The studies are published in peer-reviewed publications.
