• An organization dedicated to the preservation of the history of Fruehauf Trailer Company and the Fruehauf family legacy. The Fruehauf Trailer company revolutionized the transportation industry by inventing the semi-trailer and container shipping. August Fruehauf, a blacksmith and wagonmaker, converted a wagon for Frederic M. Sibley, a lumber tycoon in Detroit in 1914. How important was Fruehauf in the trailer industry? Often described as the General Motors of the trailer business, Fruehauf was the biggest firm in the field and sold more than all the others firms put together. Launched as a carriage builder in 1912, Fruehauf Trailers acquired world-wide stature for high-quality German craftsmanship and excellent design. By 1950's the company was on the list of the top grossing U.S. companies, becoming an industry leader with fourteen U.S. plants, one Canadian factory, and over 90 branch offices with 8,300 employees. It was ranked 75th among the largest companies worldwide in 1997. The society has created historical books and a traveling exhibit rich with Fruehauf memorabilia and archival materials. Planned for 2015 are 2 books, The Fruehauf Advertising Campaigns 1926-1960 and The Rise and Fall of the Fruehauf Trailer Company, an in-depth analysis of the companys history.
