• The Infant Welfare Society of Chicago (IWS) is a not-for-profit primary care center located on Chicagos northwest side. Founded in 1911, its original mission was to distribute pasteurized milk to low-income families in order to reduce high levels of infant mortality endemic to Chicagos immigrant communities. IWS milk stations evolved into a network of well-child clinics that provided effective child care education and medical advice to low-income mothers through a system of in-clinic consultations and home visits. The organizations early annual reports document the positive impact these services had on Chicagos poverty-stricken neighborhoods during the early 20th century, resulting in a significant decrease in infant mortality. Throughout its 104 year history, IWS has pioneered innovative pediatric care practices in treating Chicagos most vulnerable populations. Since 1924, it has incorporated child development and behavioral health counseling into its primary care model, and since 1970 it has provided pediatric dentistry services to low-income children. Orthodontic care was introduced in 1991 and pediatric optometry in 1995. Infant Welfare Society of Chicago (IWS) provides comprehensive health services to low-income women and children on Chicagos predominantly Latino northwest side. Since its relocation to Logan Square in 2005, Infant Welfare has grown from serving 7,800 patients to over 11,000 each year, providing over 52,000 annual service visits.
