Description

• Oakland Kids First (OKF) is a youth development organization that works to transform Oakland public high schools through youth-led campus culture campaigns and peer-to-peer academic mentorship. OKF's REAL HARD (Representing Educated Active Leaders Having A Righteous Dream) program actively partners with school leadership at Oakland Tech, Castlemont, Fremont and Oakland high schools to implement youth solutions to campus culture and climate issues. REAL HARD's wins have included reduced-priced youth bus passes; the creation of the PASS-2 youth mentorship program (described below); OUSD's adoption of A-G requirements as OUSD graduation requirements; OUSD's implementation of youth-led Restorative Justice in high schools; the institutionalization of youth created school values; and PBIS-alligned cultural currency and student stores to provide positive incentives to uphold these school values. OKF's PASS-2 (Peers Advising Students to Succeed) partners with Oakland Tech, Fremont, and Castlemont High Schools to run an A-G certified Civic Engagement & Social Movements course through which students are trained as mentors and provide mentoship to 9th graders. This program was born out of a REAL HARD stuent organizing campaign responding to the lack of couselros in OUSD high schools. The workshops provided by PASS-2 student leaders provide all 9th graders with a baseline on information to help them navigate their school and academic plan. Peer-to-peer mentorship helps struggling freshmen get additiona suport in a one-on-one environment. OKF also partners with our school sites and OUSD to support positive school culture, meaningful family engagement, community access to district equity data, All City Council, and Measure N implementation among other endeavors. OKF is also a founding partner of the Justice 4 Oakland Students coalition which works to ensure school sites are fully funded to equitably educate our students most in need.
