- WOS was founded by Byron Yake, a former sports writer and Sports Editor of the Associated Press. The mission of WOS is to inspire middle school students to write and improve their writing skills. Write on Sports holds summer camps and after-school programs. Students interview guest athletes and journalists and write spot and feature stories and produce videos on computers. During the summer of 2013, five two-week summer camps will be held in northern New Jersey and in Indiana. The program at Goshen College, IN in July will be the first WOS program outside New Jersey. The first camp was held in 2006 at the Yogi Museum and in the Broadcast studios of Montclair State University. Since then, more than 500 students from Newark, Montclair, Paterson, Hawthorne, Clifton, Bloomfield and West Orange have participated in the programs.Through the generous support of individuals, foundations and organizations, all Write on Sports participants are provided with full scholarships.
