• The Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired Charleston (ABVI-Charleston) has been serving and supporting individuals with visual needs in the Lowcountry for more than seventy five years. The Association for the Blind (ABVI), a private nonprofit organization, was established on October 14, 1936 by a dedicated group of volunteers led by Mrs. Fred J. Sahlman and members of the American Foundation for the Blind. The agency was later chartered and incorporated on April 19, 1937. We are South Carolinas only private, not-for-profit agency whose sole mission is to improve the quality of life for people who are visually impaired through services, programs, and advocacy by promoting independence and self-sufficiency as well as helping individuals participate fully in their communities. We have developed programs at our Association in which we offer technology training, nutrition and exercise classes, as well as social and recreational outlets. We provide vision clinics for children in Title I schools and vision clinics for uninsured or underinsured adults in the Charleston Tricounty area with the goal of providing eyecare to as many individuals as possible and detecting vision problems at an early stage before permanent damage or blindness occur.
