• The Sustainable Endowments Institute is a nonprofit organization engaged in research and education to advance sustainability in campus operations and endowment practices. Founded in 2005, the Institute is a special project of Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors.SEI currently leads the Billion Dollar Green Challenge, an initiative to encourage colleges, universities, and other nonprofit institutions to invest a combined total of one billion dollars in self-managed revolving funds that finance energy efficiency and resource efficiency upgrades on campus. Participating institutions will achieve reductions in operating expenses and greenhouse gas emissions while creating regenerating funds for future projects. For more information and participating organizations, visit GreenBillion.org.Between 2006 and 2011, the Sustainable Endowments Institute published the annual College Sustainability Report Card (www.GreenReportCard.org). The Report Card identified colleges and universities that were leaders in their commitment to sustainability on campus in a variety of categories, including food and dining initiatives, student engagement, climate change and energy projects, and endowment investments and transparency, The Report Card provided accessible information for schools to learn from one another's experiences and enabled them to establish more effective sustainability policies.
