ApoCell, based in Houston, TX, is a molecular biomarker company offering services and diagnostics to the pharmabiotech industry and translational medical groups. Spun out from MD Anderson in 2004, the company is now a leader in rare cell analysis, notably circulating tumor cells CTCs, boasting a clinical trial pedigree and using customized biomarker design approaches for clinical trials, spanning pre-clinical through phase I-III principally, although not exclusively, in oncology.ApoCell has patented detection tools and customized platforms to create unique lab-developed tests for biomarker analysis and discovery, focusing on the identification and analysis of multiple biomarkers on isolated rare cells - CTCs, CECs, and circulating stem cells - and monitoring pharmacodynamic effects of anticancer drugs. The company has participated in 148 Phase I, II, and III clinical drug trials for more than 90 sponsors. Many of the studies are described in journal publications or have been presented in poster presentationsin 2014 ApoCell successfully launched ApoStream®, a CTC enrichment platform. The device works by exploiting unique characteristics of tumor cells, distinguishing them from healthy blood cells through the principles of dielectrophoresis (DEP) and microfluidics. ApoStream has been incorporated into more than 25 ongoing clinical trials, including the phase 3 BEACON trial with Nektar for breast cancer. ApoStream technology was licensed from MD Anderson, funded and co-developed by NCI and offers a unique combination of impressive capabilities which can be applied to multiple cancer types: 1. Isolates viable cells - enables cell culture and PDx modeling. 2. Universal enrichment of all rare cell subsets - independent of antigen expression levels or the requirement for predetermined antibody labeling. 3.
