- Economist Michael Shuman writes Most economic development today is wasting money on attracting or retaining nonlocal business. Its far smarter not just to focus on locally owned business but to support them through private enterprises that are self-financing entities I call pollinators. We want to build the infrastructure to be the pollinator. First in Austin, then one or two other cities, then across the country, all enabled by technology that puts real people in personal contact with other real people. The result will be communities that are deeply connected, have stronger local economies to buffer against global influences and food systems that that are self-reliant and accessible to all.
