• Breakthrough Twin Cities (BTC) prepares under resourced students for college success and cultivates the next generation of educators. Founded in 2005, BTC ensures that low-income students of color have the same chance of going to college as their more privileged peers. Over the last decade BTC has served over 530 youth and trained 216 aspiring educators. BTC is headquartered in St. Paul residing in donated space at Mounds Park Academy. BTC set a strategic goal to serve 1,500 youth and 250+ aspiring educators in the Twin Cities by 2020. In 2014, BTC added two new locations in Promise Neighborhoods of St. Paul and North Minneapolis. BTC served 339 students (35% growth) and 42 aspiring educators (62% growth) in FY14-15 and currently serves 433 students (249 MS and 187 HS) and 64 fellows. Preparing Student for College Success BTC is a six-year, tuition-free academic enrichment and college preparatory program predominately serving 7th -12th grade low-income students of color. Students benefit from 250+ hours of rigorous academic instruction in math, science, literature, writing, and elective courses during six-week summer program and school year Saturday sessions. BTC programing leverages students strengths and competencies to ensure that they attain the social and emotional development, growth mindset, 21st century leadership skills, and entrepreneurial thinking needed to be successful in middle school, high school, college, career, and life. Cultivating Next Generation of Educators (Students Teaching Students) BTC has a second and equally important strategy to ensure all youth succeed in school by creating a pipeline of diverse educators. BTC recruits high school and college students to apply to BTCs Teaching Residency Fellowship program. Fellows implement BTCs summer and year round out-of-school time program curriculum under the direction and mentorship of licensed educators in the Twin Cities that serve as instructional coaches and BTC program staff.
