• Founded in 2007, the Distinctive Women in Hawaiian History is a community-based organization celebrating the little-known stories of strong, resilient women who have helped shape the social and cultural fabric of Hawai'i. The celebration bridges academic history and community memory through illustrated presentations, panel discussions, dramatic performance, music, hula dance, poetry, and film. Mission: advance and examine scholarship on distinctive women in Hawaiian history. We showcase the stories of women who have lived/transited in Hawai`i and impacted its social and cultural history. It also explores the activities of women over the ages activities that helped create community amongst women and helped them find ways to move their families and communities forward. Our programs serve as a conduit and catalyst to lifelong learning by providing scholars, students, and cultural practitioners the ability to share their research and engage the community. No one academic discipline/institution dominates the telling of Hawaiian historywe showcase the multitude of organizations that contribute to that body of knowledge and their exploration of the stories of our female ancestors.Every presentation celebrates Hawaiian history in a manner that invites the audience to embrace aspects of the culture within the shared intimacy of our storytelling. These stories and the underlining themes woven within the program provide a comprehensive and compelling interlocking narrative.
