• Our company was started by two colleagues who tackled a technology problem that plagued many industries, but was specific to their particular area, healthcare IT. Andrew Goodwin was working for Froedtert Health, when he attended a BioSIG meeting, where he learned that the Medical College of Wisconsin faced a dilemma. Every month, MCW nominated 60 to 70 kids to be sequenced and diagnosed for treatment plans for their genetic conditions. Because the heavy data streams of genetic information were too time-intensive to download, they could only choose five children. A technical problem was preventing all those kids from getting help. For Andrew, who was adopted and had a genetic anomaly with no hereditary insights, the situation was unacceptable. He teamed up with his Froedtert colleague, Matt Fisher, and they determined that the problem was not compressing and unzipping files, but the structure of the data itself. They took a step back to get a better viewand discovered a way to detour from the common route of high-volume data streams. Over a month of evening and weekend work, they built a program that re-structured the data. With the genius of software architect Shonte Amato-Grill, Relican became real. The system- and data-agnostic solution now enables scientists to do research that used to take months and complete it in a few minutesfrom a tablet or smartphone.
