• The Institute for Transformative Technologies started in 2012 with a group at the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, with a simple but compelling question: how can the worlds leading centers of R&D solve the biggest social and environmental challenges affecting the global poor? To answer that question, we began with the 50 Breakthroughs study to identify the most effective ways in which advanced technology can move the needle on such problems. We now work with a global network of research institutions and inventors to find the most promising early-stage technologies, and then with established companies, NGOs and public agencies around the world to bring these breakthroughs to life. Our core partners are The Tata Trusts and Tata Group of Companies, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Schmidt Family Foundation, the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, the University of California Berkeley, MIT, and the Indian Institutes of Technology. We work on a broad range of topicsfood security, health, water, electricity, and environmental damagecarefully selecting interventions where advanced technology can have the biggest impact. Our current geographic focus is in India, Pakistan, Kenya and Rwanda.
