• Focus on Nature (FON) is a non-profit organization providing educational programming that inspires young people to explore and connect with nature through photography. Currently funded through the Ontario Trillium Foundation and Ontario Arts Council, the program is part of an international movement to develop innovative ways to nurture the relationship between children and the natural world. Based on a consensus in the research about the physical and emotional health benefits of spending time in nature, and recent reports linking the increased incidence of childhood obesity, anxiety, depression and stress to our indoor, sedentary culture, the program uses photography as a tool to propel kids outdoors. Developed by a Guelph-based social worker and a photographer, with valuable input from FON's advisory board and community members, Focus on Nature has evolved into a one to two-day program with photography workshops, hands-on nature and sensory activities, and photography field trips motivating young people to get outdoors, and pay attention to the beauty of nature in their own communities.Focus on Nature staff are currently engaged in strategic planning processes, volunteer recruitment and training, community engagement and partnership development, the creation of teaching resources and training workshops, resource development planning, and delivery and evaluating our educational program.
