To enter the theater is to be in the presence of two creative and passionate spirits, who with their talent, tenacity, and love of their craft provide inspiration for us today: famed dancer and Hollywood movie legend Gene Kelly, born and raised in East Liberty and Homewood-bred jazz composer Billy Strayhorn. Their spirits abound in the young East End artists of today.The Kelly Strayhorn Theater is an intimate, professionally-equipped, 350-seat multiple-use performance venue. With a commitment to support the burgeoning arts community in the city of Pittsburgh, the theater serves as an ideal place for emerging local artists, regional artists and arts organizations to take risks and present new work.In our seventh season of original programming, the Kelly Strayhorn Theaters board and staff is excited to embark upon an expanded artistic vision. In addition to serving as a quality arts rental facility for up-and-coming small arts organizations, we will also begin to offer first-rate programming of our own, with a particular focus on interdisciplinary collaborations that showcase diverse and contemporary artistic ideas and practices.
