• Renovate by Berkowitz (RbB) was established following a lengthy period of research and development by the owners of J.E. Berkowitz, LP (JEB). As an architectural glass fabricator since 1920, JEB saw a need in the market for a product or system for existing office building owners to upgrade their single glazed windows/curtain wall systems. Typically, buildings built prior to the mid-1970s used single-glazed windows or curtain wall systems.JEB saw a market void. So, in 2006 we developed our first prototype of the Renovate by Berkowitz window retrofit system. We took our prototype to Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) show in Anaheim, Calif., to see if there was any market interest. Marketing under the posed question; Is your building an energy hog, we spent a few days talking to building owners, developers and facility management personnel. We came away believing we had touched a chord with building owners/managers of existing buildings, and vision of a new product opportunity.As one of the leading architectural glass fabricators in the country, we experienced tremendous demand for glass products for new commercial construction during the commercial building boom in the mid-2000s. Unfortunately, our Renovate by Berkowitz idea got shelved until 2009. It was the economic downturn experienced in 2009 that got us rethinking about Renovate by Berkowitz and the possibilities for growth opportunities for a product targeted at the renovation/energy saving market.In 2009 we formally moved ahead into our new business, forming our new company, Renovate by Berkowitz, LLC. Our years of experience in the glass fabrication industry and our continued R&D work on Renovate by Berkowitz system had paid off, landing our initial installation of Renovate in 2010.
