• The Village Method (TVM) is an afro-centric, community-based nonprofit organization founded and led by husband and wife team, Mark and Mahea Gaskins. At The Village Method, our mission is to strengthen communities by being a conduit of empowerment for youth and families of African-ancestry. We stand in the gaps and develop systems of engagement that benefit and cater to the Black community. This includes gaps in Educational institutions, civic representation, access to wealth and other areas of advocacy. In 2014, TVM developed a partnership with its first school in Southern Alameda County and piloted the After-school Enrichment Academy for a cohort of 30 African American students. In 2015, the organization expanded into a second middle school serving an additional 25 students. The goal is to develop a college bound cohort system of supports for youth and families from sixth grade TO and THROUGH college. In partnering with the school district to build an academic program for African American students, TVM staff and volunteers learned that success must be defined by the ability to build the capacity of students, parents, and schools respectively. TVMs model has thus evolved into a comprehensive approach that combines direct service, family engagement, and academic advocacy.
